Financial Difficulties

Many people experience financial difficulties, and the cost of living crisis has only deepened the problem.

To prevent financial difficulties getting any worse, some people look to budget their outgoings, and you might hear people talk about the ‘50/30/20’ budget rule. This advises that 50% of your take-home pay should go on needs, 30% on wants and 20% on savings.

But no one is pretending there are easy answers. Many households struggle to pay for their essential needs. And it can be difficult to sacrifice any occasional luxuries (the wants) in favour of the finances looking in better shape in the long-run.

Citizens Advice has free information on topics such as budgeting, cost of living and help with debt – https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/

When it comes to debts especially, there are lots of companies that offer help and services – but it’s important to remember that a lot of debt advice is available for free. A good starting point is to contact the companies you have debt with and explain that you are in financial difficulties. Companies have a moral (and often regulatory) duty to respond positively and sympathetically when a customer explains that they are in debt and struggling to maintain repayments. Often, by being open and honest, an arrangement can be made directly with the company concerned.
